Box Canon Line Project
Background:
The Box Canon line was originally installed in the 1920’s and has been repaired several times since. In May of 2009 a collapsed portion of the line was discovered. The City of Ouray Public Works crew installed a temporary line. The temporary fix is functioning but it is becoming more difficult to maintain hot water temperatures in the pool with the changing season and fewer daylight hours.
The areas being repaired or built include the portal, the pipe crossing the river, the line attached to the canyon wall and the vault. There is a wing wall on both sides of the the pipe that crosses the river and another wing wall by the vault.
March 23, 2010 update:
Phase 1 of the line replacement project has now been completed. The crews constructed necessary deflector walls, the channel crossing, and an extensive collection system around the vault spring. These improvements have significantly improved the flows and water temperature to the pool. Some minor work will be done once spring has arrived but now attention will focus on the engineering for phases 2 and 3. The goal is to have the engineering completed for these phases by earlier summer. Funding for these two construction projects will be a challenge to locate and construction may not actually take place until 2011 or later. In the mean time, the increased flows and temperatures have provided excellent conditions at the pool for this winter and should easily continue through the years to come.
Congratulations to all that participated in this first phase, especially to all the members of the City Crew that spent many hours in very difficult conditions to get this project completed.
